soup

Why I hate cutting up butternut squash: I usually cut myself, somehow.

Why I love my fingernail: I still have the tip of my left index finger. And the squash and corn chowder is still officially vegetarian.

Damn non-self-cutting food.

Early on in our dating, my husband and I were attending a friend's wedding. I noticed on the way there that he had duct tape around one finger. Turns out he had cut himself chopping something in the kitchen but didn't want to go (back) to the ER for stitches so he covered the gash with a paper towel and then duct taped it together. Yet one more use for duct tape.

Try the cleaver.
I have watched Triskele do this on occasion, and, while it is greatly amusing, it also seems to work!

Take the cleaver in one hand, put the item to be cleaved upon the block, step back (with the OTHER hand BEHIND YOUR BACK), and...well....CLEAVE!

Making a sound with your voice seems to also be a part of this process. Something like "HAI-YAH!!"

It works for those tough winter squash, as well as for raw sweet potatoes. (I prefer to munch these foods raw, however, as they help clean the flesh and bones from between my fangs!)
